The Problem: There are approximately 2 million people
living in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Of those 2 million,
statistics indicate that over a million are unchurched. Specifically,
in the North Hills area of Pittsburgh there are 150,000 people
living within a 5-mile radius.
The Pittsburgh metro area is the 21st largest city in America
and a few years ago the city was ranked the third most religious
city in the U.S. However, less than 5% of the population identified
themselves as "evangelical protestant." As you can see, the need
for dynamic, outreach-oriented Christian churches is alarming.
In our particular area, the numbers are even more startling.
While there are a number of churches inside the 5-mile radius
described above, most of them have reached a plateau or are declining.
More disturbing still, statistics tell us that of the 150,000
people living in this area approximately 100,000 do not have a
relationship with Christ.
In short, the problem is that "lostness" is an epidemic in our
community.
The Solution: Jesus. More specifically, to plant a church
in the North Hills that will reach out to those who are far from
God; specifically three groups: lost, unchurched, and dechurched.
- Lost: Individuals who have not yet responded in faith to
the gospel of Jesus Christ
- Unchurched: Individuals who may or may not know Christ,
but have no relationship with a church at this time
- Dechurched: Individuals who may or may not know Christ,
and at one time had some sort of relationship with church, but
have been turned off, disillusioned, or alienated by that experience
This new church will seek to reach as many people as possible
through: personal evangelism, community outreach, small groups
that are authentic and challenging, worship gatherings that are
dynamic and applicational to real-life, and additional church
plants. Iron City Church's ultimate aim is to make it hard to
go to hell from the Pittsburgh metro area.
Something must be done because: Without Jesus, about 100,000
people in this community will die and spend eternity in hell.
Something must be done NOW because: People are dying every
day.
